Has your pregnancy just been confirmed? It’s time to tell your parents. But how? What should you say? Take a deep breath. You’re not alone. Many women have been in the same position as you.

Here are the steps you should take to tell your mom and dad that you are pregnant:

  • 1.Have a Plan.

It is important that you know how you’re going to handle your pregnancy moving forward. This shows your parents that you are responsible and have thought through your options. We can help you with this. At Cross Roads, we have a team of women who would love to sit down with you and talk through your options and help you get a game plan for this pregnancy.

  • 2.Choose a good time.

The worst time to tell your parents about your pregnancy is in a hurried or stressful moment. Stress often leads to heated emotions, so it is imperative that you choose a relaxed time of day when you’re all together. Not only should you pick a day that is good for them, but for you, as well. Be rested. If it would help keep your words brief and to the point, give yourself enough time to write down what you plan to say before choosing a time to meet with your family.

  • 3.Stay Calm and Answer Their Questions.

Parents can react in a variety of ways. Even if they start freaking out, you need to remain calm. Answer their questions in a firm but loving tone. Here are some of the questions they might ask:

What are you going to do with the baby?

Who is that dad?

Who else have you told?

Are you going to parent alone or with the father?

Have you thought about abortion?

What about adoption?

  • 4.Listen.

Listen to your parents and understand that they’ll have concerns about your pregnancy. Have patience with them and express your thankfulness for their concern in wanting what’s best for their daughter.

  • 5.What If Mom & Dad Don’t Support You?

Your parents may try to pressure you into doing what they think it the right decision for you. Don’t forget that the decision is ultimately up to you. This is your pregnancy. It will affect you the most.
